Factors to consider when purchasing a P.C. or Laptop
The factors you will need to consider whether you are buying a P.C. or a laptop will vary depending on if you’re buying it for home use or business two. For example you will need more processing power, R.A.M. and more memory on a P.C. than you would on a laptop. I say this because laptops are usually used on the go instead of a stationary work station at home or in the work place. Another key factor to consider will be portability.
Personal Computer (P.C.)
For buying a home computer the main aspects you would need to consider would be to do with screen size, processing power, R.A.M. hard drive space memory and how up to date it would be and if you would need certain things that it supplies. There would be no point in buying a gaming personal computer if you’re going to use it for Microsoft word and iTunes. It would be unnecessary and a waste of money. For this course if I was buying a personal computer the main aspects I would consider would be R.A.M., memory and screen size. I would need at least 4-5 GB of ram in order for it to run smoothly, I would need this as windows vista uses approximately one GB of R.A.M. in order to run at any given time. I would need at least 500 GB of memory space on the hard drive as I would be using it to store a lot of text files as well as music files which is roughly 20 GB. But as it is also a home pc I wouldn’t be the only person in my household using it. There would need to be enough memory on the hard drive to hold enough documents and files for five people. I would also need a minimum monitor size of approx. 17 inches as I find this would be the minimum size monitor I would feel comfortable working behind. Any smaller I’ve found causes discomfort for my eyes as some text appears too small. The ideal size would be 18-20 inches approx. I would also require Microsoft office as default software as I need to use Microsoft word for assignments and office to view power points at home from college.
Laptop
For buying a personal laptop I would need to consider a lot more aspects as if it was a laptop I would be the main user of it and it would be brought in to college and home. It would need to be very lightweight but also have good processing power for its size as I would be taking it out my bag and need it fully loaded up quickly. For this I would need roughly 3 GB of R.A.M. for the same reason as the pc as vista uses approx. 1 GB of R.A.M. at any time. Screen size would also be a big aspect of choosing a laptop as the bigger the screen the more difficult it would be to carry in and out of college and also the bigger the laptop would be the more expensive it would be this would also contribute to the weight of the laptop. The ideal screen size would be no bigger than 14 inches. As the keyboard is proportional to the screen size and I would prefer a bigger keyboard. It would be essential that it could cold boot extremely quickly and be very lightweight so it would not be difficult bringing it in and out of college. As for the hard drive I would not need much memory. I would ask for a basic deal of about 100-250 GB as text files struggle to take up more than 1 MB and as there wouldn’t even be enough text files to take up even a quarter of a GB. I would purchase an external hard drive to ensure I have a constant backup of all my files, music and college assignments and to manage overflow if necessary.
Netbook
The purchase of a netbook is also an option in the purchase of a personal computer/laptop for my course. I do feel that of the three this would be the most logical option and they are all extremely lightweight. The only thing that would prevent me from purchasing a netbook would be that it would be considered a secondary laptop. I would only use it in college and if I had the option of using a P.C. or a bigger laptop at home I would so I would prefer to purchase a laptop as I would use it a lot more. As well as its downside there are a lot of upsides to netbooks. For example they are extremely lightweight and versatile would be incredibly easy to bring in and out of college and even be able to use on the go for example on the bus. If I was to purchase a netbook I would go for a basic model. Roughly about 2 GB of R.A.M. would suffice and 100 GB of memory. As for the screen size I would go for about 10” as I would only be using it for a short amount of time.
